With support from the Department of Veterans Affairs, Disabled Sports USA is partnering with NCHPAD to award 20 individual training grants to staff/volunteers of VA Medical Centers, DSUSA Chapters, and other individuals serving disabled veterans at no cost who wish to earn Certified Inclusive Fitness Trainer certification.

An ACSM/NCHPAD Certified Inclusive Fitness Trainer (CIFT) is a fitness professional who assesses, develops and implements individualized exercise programming for children and adults with a physical, sensory or cognitive disability. ACSM/NCHPAD CIFTs make exercise accessible for all – empowering individuals to achieve their fitness goals!

Training Grant includes the following items (valued at up to $900):

  • *Inclusive Fitness Workshop registration fee
  • CIFT exam fee
  • ACSM Alliance of Health and Fitness Membership fee
  • ACSM/NCHPAD Resources for the Inclusive Fitness Trainer textbook
  • **American Council on Exercise Personal Trainer Certification basic study program & exam fee

*In lieu of attending an Inclusive Fitness Workshop in person, you may participate in the CIFT Webinar Series
**Limited to individuals who are not currently certified as personal trainers

Requirements:

  • Provide services at no cost for disabled veterans
  • ***Currently certified as a personal trainer OR pursuing certification as a personal trainer OR have an undergraduate degree in exercise science, recreation therapy, or adapted physical education
  • Current adult CPR/AED certification

***ACSM or NCCA-accredited health/fitness-related certifications (e.g. ACE, NCSF, NASM, NFPT, NSCA, Cooper Institute)


Priority consideration will be given to individuals who:

  • Are currently employed/volunteer at a VA Medical Center or a chapter of Disabled Sports USA
  • Are certified personal trainers OR have an undergraduate degree in exercise science, recreation therapy, or adapted physical education
  • Can attend a 1.5 day Inclusive Fitness Workshop (March 5-6, 2020 Birmingham, AL OR April 22-23, 2020 Albany, NY)
  • Include a letter of recommendation from supervisor
  • Individuals with disabilities and veterans are encouraged to apply
  • Describe in application a significant need for the training (i.e. limited training opportunities in the local area, impact on services to disabled veterans in current/future programming)
